HTML5 workshop — New York City

In the past few years, HTML5 has gone from a WHATWG project to the official W3C draft revision to HTML and has captured the attention of web designers and developers world-wide.

Taught by industry leader and W3C invited expert Tantek Çelik, this introductory workshop will cover everything you need to know to get started with HTML5.

In half a day you will learn:

  • HTML5 basics. What HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0 features have changed in HTML5, what were the reasons behind those changes, and how to transition your site so it validates as HTML5.
  • New HTML5 semantics. HTML5 adds several new semantic building blocks modeled on common web publishing patterns.
  • Native media. HTML5 has built-in audio, video and even drawing support. Learn how to use these and other features with fallbacks to support browsers as they make the transition.
  • Cutting edge features. HTML5 introduces a number of new features that a few browsers have implemented and be used to enhance web applications, when used carefully.
  • Bleeding edge features. HTML5 is in last call in the WHATWG, and as such contains a few very new features that are either only partially/experimentally implemented or not implemented at all! Learn how you can try these "bleeding edge" features in experiments, and how to give constructive feedback to the W3C HTML working group to help them improve before HTML5 is finalized!

The workshop is on Wednesday, November 18th (2009-11-18), from 9:30am to 12:30pm.

Registration and sign-in from 9-9:30am.

Coffee and snacks will be provided, as well as a light vegetarian lunch from 12:30-1:30pm. Attendees may also bring their own lunch. The Shake Shack and other convenient options are located nearby.

Dedicated to advancing open standards and simpler data formats for the Web, Tantek Çelik co-founded both GMPG and the growing microformats.org open standards community after many years of experience contributing to, writing, and editing specifications at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) where he is currently an invited expert to the CSSWG and HTMLWG working on CSS3 and HTML5 respectively.

In 2003 Tantek collaborated with Eric Meyer and Matt Mullenweg in the invention of the XHTML Friends Network (), which has since become the most popular decentralized social relationship format in the history of the Web with billions of relationships indexed and accessible via the Google Social Graph API. In 2004 Tantek proposed  for representing people and organizations, which has since similarly become the most popular profile format on the Web, supported by hundreds of millions of user profiles across dozens of social networks. During his years as Technorati's Chief Technologist, Tantek played an active role in refining and evangelizing these microformats, guiding them from wiki proposals to well-recognized open web formats endorsed and implemented by numerous individuals, small organizations, and major companies ranging from AOL to Yahoo.

Previously Tantek was a veteran representative to the W3C for Microsoft, where he also helped lead the development of the award-winning Internet Explorer 5 for Macintosh, the first web browser to bring widespread standards compliant HTML4 + CSS1 + PNG1 support to millions of users.

Tantek has Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Computer Science from Stanford University, as well as a strong background in human interface and user-centered design from his many years at Apple Computer. He shares his thoughts on tantek.com and his Twitter: twitter.com/t.
